Summer is around the corner and we are definitely excited by longer nights and warmer weather. Instead of fighting the heat by pumping up your A.C., here are a few tips to keep your energy use low during the hot summer months.
1. Use your air conditioner wisely
Keep the thermostat as high as you can comfortably have it. Simple logic says that the smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the less hard your air conditioner has to work to regulate the temperatures.
2. Opt for Natural Ventilation in the Evening
A cross breeze is a beautiful thing. Turn the A.C. off and open a few of your windows instead. Take advantage of the cooler air while the sun is down!
3. Operate your Appliances at Night
If you need to run a large appliance like a washing machine or dishwasher, do it while you are sleeping! They can unnecessarily warm up a room so leave it for when you go to bed.
4. Eat Smart
The oven is not your friend in the summer months. Not only do they use loads of electricity, they make the kitchen an inferno! Eat cold foods, or head outside for a BBQ instead.
5. Turn the Lights Off
Who needs light bulbs when you have the sun? It might be an automatic habit to flip the switch when you walk into a room, but take advantage of natural light before you opt for electricity.
6. Air Dry Your Clothes
We are always advocates of hanging up your clothes to dry, and the summer is a great time to jump on the bandwagon. Not only will this keep your electricity usage down, but it makes your clothes last longer! (Pro-Tip: Hang your coloured clothing at night to prevent colour fading from the sun.)
7. Go outside!
This seems like the most obvious way to cool down in the summer. Grab an ice cream cone, your favourite book and simply head outside! Check out your local beach or pool, or simply enjoy the shade.
